Me

HELLO

For the past several years I have thought of my art as a way to evoke tranquillity, to pause the practicalities and demands of the every day. Having painted on and off for years it was lockdown that gave me the luxury of time to take classes and find my style.

I started with the natural world, taking inspiration from the shapes and colours of landscapes and grasslands around me, adding seascapes as I longed for the ever changing blues and greens  of oceans and seas. In seeking to capture the gentle play of light I add a lot of textures with paint and pastes, while at the same time keeping parts of my paintings as smooth as possible. I had to resist the urge to level everything to the same plane, so that each piece would represent the way light accentuates the active and passive we have around us. A reminder that imperfection is a crucial part of beauty even as modern expectations seems to train us to seek perfection.

I see my practice as a way to disconnect from a busy life; to quieten and focus solely on creating. My hope is that forming pieces which strive to capture the beauty of the natural world reminds the viewer to slow down and to recharge for a moment as they adopt the pace of nature.

While not set up as a commercial site yet I’m happy to sell my art if you like what you see. Please contact me for details art.courtneywaterman@gmail.com

Painting helps me and in return I try to use it to help others. Fifty percent of the money raised by my art (after costs) goes to charity, focusing on people, community and conservation. The charities I currently support with any sales are:

My father has been a great influence for me. Dad - this site is to see what you started when you first showed me how to focus a lens.
